Training Available to Prep for Commercial Driver Licenses

Commercial Driver License Test Prep

If you wish to drive a commercial motor vehicle, you’ll need a Commercial Driver License (CDL). Obtaining a CDL is a smart move for any union member because contractors need employees that have the commercial driver license.

“It’s going to make our union members more employable if they have the CDL,” said Al DeVita, Training Director of Northern Nevada Laborers’ Apprenticeship and Training Program. “That is more hours that go into the health, welfare and pension funds. It’s good for the individual members, and it’s good for the Union on the whole. It’s makes us stronger.”

The Northern Nevada Laborers’ Apprenticeship and Training Program offers two levels of courses to help union members. First, the CDL Prep Level 1 will help you get your Nevada Commercial Learners Permit. The CDL Prep Level 2 class prepares you to take the CDL Skills test and includes preparation for the Pre-trip Inspection Test and the Air Breaks Test. The classes are taught by a DMV Examiner who will walk you through the procedures during hands-on demonstrations.

If you are a member that is serious about obtaining your CDL, you are welcome to attend as many of the classes as you need.  If you’d like to sign up, the upcoming classes are:

  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1 on Jan. 30, 5pm – 9pm.
  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1 on Feb. 6, 5pm – 9pm.
  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 2 on Feb. 8, 7am – 3:30pm
  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1 on Feb. 13, 5pm – 9pm
  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1 on Feb. 20, 5pm – 9pm
  • Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 2 on Feb. 22, 7am – 3:30pm

Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1

The Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 1 is an 8 hour class that reviews the NVDOT Commercial Driver’s License Study Guide and will help those members who are preparing for the General Knowledge Test. The class will also cover the process to obtain the CDL license. Course length will vary depending on knowledge level of class.

We encourage you to review the NVDOT CDL requirements.

It is critical that those wishing to obtain a CDL also study the Nevada Commercial Driver License Manual. Independent study will be required if you want to obtain your CDL! Additional resources are available at https://www.dmvnv.com/cdl.htm.

This class helps you pass the written test and get your Nevada Commercial Learner Permit, which is good for 180 days. You are required to get a Commercial Learner Permit if:

  • this will be the first time you will be getting a CDL,
  • you are upgrading a CDL to a higher class, adding an endorsement or removing a restriction that requires a skills test and the upgrade requires a skills test, or
  • your CDL privileges have been invalid for more than 4 years.
Commercial Driver’s License Prep – Level 2

This 10-12 hour class will review pre-trip inspections and air brakes during classroom and hands-on sessions. The class will help participants prepare for the NVDOT CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Skills Test and Air Brakes Skills Test. All participants will be able to perform a pre-trip inspection and air brake check under the guidance of the instructor, and will receive feedback on areas that need improvement. Pre-requisite: participants must have a Commercial Learner’s Permit in hand.

What is a commercial motor vehicle?

If the vehicle is used in commerce to transport passengers or property and it:

  • Has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds; or
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more; or
  • Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or
  • Is of any size and is used in the transportation of hazardous materials that require placarding.

Age Requirements:
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to be issued a CDL to operate a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce and to receive endorsements for passengers or hazardous materials.
  • You must be at least 25 to receive an endorsement for vehicle combinations over 70 feet in length.
  • CDLs issued to applicants age 18 to 20 will contain Restriction R (no passengers or hazmat) and Restriction 2 (intrastate commerce only).
